I hear a strange sound with a stethoscope when I shake a pendulum.

Chaosmos Wave Machine 4(1995)
Wave machine that can be operated from shore on pond.
The ripple that thependulum makes destroys the image of the surface of the water complexly.

Chaosmos Turbulent Flow Machine 10(1999)
Turbulent flow happens to the liquid in the glass globe when turning a handle.

[CHAOSMOS?]

“CHAOSMOS” is the art project series that has been conducted by CHAOSMOS /TOMIOKA Masahiro since1994.
“CHAOSMOS Machines” are
the interactive machines, which present unexpected motions and appear complicated phenomena of the nature by the audience’s “playing” without any energy sources.
To be brief, the word “CHAOSMOS” means to interact with complicated phenomena of the nature.
“CHAOSMOS Machines” are the interactive apparatus that make it possible for the audience to get real-time responses from complicated phenomena of the nature.

・[Experience of touching complicated phenomena of the nature and unexpected movement]
They may make you have real-time experiences that you feel the fundamental forces constituting the universe. These forces are, in the broadest sense, the objects of the chaos theory, hydrodynamics, non-linear physics etc.

・[“CHAOSMOS Machines” need not be supplied power (e.g. electric power).]
Only “playing” of the audience is needed. It is the audience themselves that makes phenomena to experience. We hope you to touch them like music instruments, so we express “to play them” instead of “to operate them”.

・[Dialog between the audience and complicated phenomena of the nature]
“CHAOSMOS Machines” arise a different reaction or phenomenon according to the different way of playing by the audience.
The subject of “CHAOSMOS” is how the audience interacts with such a sensitive reaction of the nature by his own way. It means to grope for a new view of nature.
